Native Americans First people showed up in America about 22,000 years ago Adena & Hopewell in Ohio River Valley Mississippian in Tennessee Anasazi & Hohokam in Southwest Spread to many tribes by the 1400s

Jamestown First permanent English settlement in the New World Set up in Virginia Part of a joint-stock company

Joint-Stock Company New explorations were not funded by the state Funded by investors Investors would yield the profit of any money made by the colony Had to obtain a charter from the controlling government Gave some of the profit to the gov’t
