1 Bell Ringer – 3/28/08 In paragraph form, explain the different classes that existed in the United States 100 years ago. Also, comment on if you believe the class structure has changed today.

2 Ultra Wealthy  Andrew Carnegie – steel tycoon, sold his company for $500 million before he died, but donated $350 million to charity (libraries especially)  John D. Rockefeller – businessman who started Stand Oil Company, also gave millions to charity

3 The Carnegie Mansion - NYC

4 Rockefeller Mansion – Cleveland, Ohio

5 Cornelius Vanderbilt (railroad tycoon) mansion – North Carolina

6 Jane Addams  Quaker woman who led the American settlement-house movement (places for poor)  Hull House – started by Addams in an old Chicago mansion; provided day care and education for poor immigrants; helped unemployed find jobs

7 Locust Street Social Settlement  The first African American settlement house  It was started by teacher Janie Porter Barrett in 1890 in Hampton, Virginia  Helped young ladies learn to cook, sew, and care for children

8 Social Gospel Movement  Movement by Protestant ministers to fight poverty  Social Gospel – apply Christian principles to fight social problems  Churches offered classes, counseling, job training, libraries, free kindergarten, gymnasiums for youth, and meal programs

9 Homework  Read Ch 16, Sn 3 (505-511)  Answer questions 1,2, & 4a,b,c on page 511
