Political Parties Mr. Patten, Ms. Dennis & Ms. Cook

Two Party System The two party system is a rarity, occurring in only about 15 countries in the world today. But the United States has had two major political parties- the Republicans and the Democrats- throughout most of its history. Even though minor parties do exist, many believe those two parties have the only reasonable chance to win national elections. Even on the state and local levels, nearly all elected officials belong to one party or another. On the national level, one party is sometimes more powerful than the other, and the rival may be declared “dead,” but the balance of power between the parties changes over time.

Roles of Political Parties 1. Recruiting and Labeling: – Parties simplify the election process by selecting candidates for the voters. – The party label serves as a seal of approval. – Parties help provide a sense of the candidate’s political views

Roles of Political Parties 2. Acting as Watchdogs: – Represent an opposing view and voice concerns over the policies and decisions of the major party in power. 3. Getting Out Information: – Publicize their point of view. Citizens learn and develop opinions about society’s problems.

Roles of Political Parties 4. Running the Government: – Congress and state legislatures are organized by party affiliation. – Most appointments to government positions are made along party lines.

Influences of Political Attitudes Family – Most important determinant – Majority of young people identify with their parents’ political party – Over time their views change and they may be less likely to agree with their parents on certain issues such as equal rights and military spending.

The Influence of Political Parties Gender – Gender sensitive issues exist today in the U.S. Examples: war, gun control, etc. 1950’s women were typically Republican. Today women are more likely to be democrats than men.

The Influence of Political Parties Religion – Religion typically influences economic issues such as taxes, welfare and national spending. – Religion also influences social issues like equal rights, abortion, and school prayer.

The Influence of Political Parties Education – College age students are typically more liberal – School provides young people with opportunity to interact with peers, and it serves as an agent of political socialization.

The Influence of Political Parties Race and Ethnicity – African Americans have been consistently more liberal than Caucasian Americans. Widely support the Democratic party. – Caucasian Americans are more likely to be Republican.

The Influence of Political Parties Region – Northeasterners have long held the reputation of having more liberal political views. – Southerners and Westerners are much more conservative.
