English Language Arts? English Language Arts class is your child’s reading and writing class. Last year, your child’s reading teacher and writing teacher were different. Advantage of having them for both components of ELA

Curriculum Based on the Core Curriculum Content Standards – don’t just “cover” Vehicle used to drive standards – Glencoe Literature - short stories, poems, plays, biographies, autobiographies, myths, and informational text. Writing Assignments include: response to literature, narratives, argument essay, descriptive essay, business letter, and research paper. Group Assignments: Acting, Posters, Debates, TV Commercials

Grading System Summative Assessment 80% Purpose: to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional period ex. tests, final writing pieces Formative Assessment 15% Purpose: to monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback Homework 5% Purpose: to practice the skill or strategy from the day’s lesson

The PARCC Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers PARCC – Performance Based (75%) & End of Year Assessments (90%) Questions based on the standards Technology Challenging The PARCC is not the end all and be all of this class. My goal is have our students become capable readers, writers, and thinkers. If we are able to attain this goal, then we will be prepared for this assessment.
