Description ► The Museum has a permanent exhibit called Footsteps Through Time: Four Million Years of Human Evolution exhibit. This is where students can Explore 65 million years of hominids in the exhibits five galleries that offer an in-depth look at evolution. The Footsteps exhibit is filled with more than 100 replicas of early humans, primates and cyborgs of the future. Students can see how far human kind has come as they compare their hands, feet, and brains to those of primates. Then, they can enjoy a variety of dioramas, including a Neanderthal burial from more than 60,000 years ago.

Pre-field trip Lesson ► K.W.L. Chart (“I Wonder….”) Prior to the field trip, the students will construct a K.W.L. chart as a class. They will first organize their ideas by working with partners to discuss what they already know about early hominids. Then they will write their thoughts on post-its and as a class, they will put these thoughts on a chart under “What I KNOW.” The students will then formulate questions about what they WONDER about early man and write these thoughts on another post-it. They will then come up to the chart and put these thoughts under “What I WANT to know.” We will discuss these questions and the teacher will formulate a handout the students can use to answer any questions asked in the “What I want to know” column on the K.W.L. chart.

Field Trip activity ► The students will use their “I Wonder” questions from the K.W.L. chart they created in class. ► They will work in partners to try to answer as many questions as they can as well as some questions the teacher added to further their inquiry. ► The questions will be created to be like a “scavenger hunt” and there will be a prize for the groups that find the most answers.
7
Post-Field Trip activity ► After filling out as many of their questions on the handout, the students will have the opportunity to discuss their findings from the Museum of Man. ► They will be able to now fill out the last column on the K.W.L. chart: the “What I LEARNED.” ► The students will first discuss with their neighbors and then with the whole class about their finding and we will determine then who found the most answers. Whoever found the most will then get a “prize” (determined by the teacher) for the team who wins the scavenger hunt. ► The students will then write their “answers” to the questions on a post-it to answer what they wrote in the “What I WANT to know” section of the chart. They will place these findings on the chart in the front of the class. ► The class will determine what questions still need to be answered and have the opportunity to do further research.
