Period 8Gary Clements1 How to do an oil change Gary Clements 35154 Period 8

Gary Clements2 What you’ll need The car (obviously) Hydraulic car lift Floor jack (if lift isn’t available) Jack stands (if using floor jack) Creeper (if using floor jack and jack stands) New oil filter New oil (amount and type may vary)

Period 8Gary Clements3 What you’ll need (pt.2) Ratchet (probably 3/8 but size may vary) Socket (size will vary) Oil filter wrench Funnel Drain pan (or another place for the old oil to spill out) Place to dump oil (do not use sink or any

Period 8Gary Clements4 directions First raise the vehicle high enough to stand under (or for a creeper to fit under it with enough room to work with) Put drain pan in place so it will catch the oil Find oil pan and unscrew oil plug so that the old oil pours out into the pan Wait for all the oil to pour out and put oil plug back

Period 8Gary Clements5 Directions (pt.2) Make sure oil plug is tightened enough and wipe any excess oil off bottom of oil pan Find oil filter and use oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter (may not be needed if oil filter has black grip on it) Make sure the pan catches any oil that comes out of the oil filter hole and dump contents of oil filter into the pan then place the filter upside down Dip finger in old oil and put a thin layer of oil around the edges of the oil filter

Period 8Gary Clements6 Directions (pt.3) Lower car (if using hydraulic car lift lowering if it’s on jack stands isn’t needed) Find and remove oil cap and put funnel in place Pour oil into funnel (allow time for all the oil in the funnel to go into the oil pan) Replace oil cap and check dip stick add oil if your low

Period 8Gary Clements7 Challenges The oil filter may be difficult to remove without black grip or oil filter wrench You could pour too much oil into the engine You could forget to replace oil cap or oil plug Oil filter may be difficult to find There may be a cover blocking the oil filter (this can easily be removed) May spill oil onto the engine (can be stopped with use of a funnel)
