These needs are very basic, needs of survival such as air, water, food, shelter, sleep. If one does not have food to eat, he or she will not achieve next because all you will think about it finding food. Think about the class before lunch, you forgot to have breakfast and you are starving, are you listening to what is going on in class or are you staring at the clock trying to count down to lunch?

One strives to remain in a save environment. He or she is not trying to reach the next level of love and belongingness of one is striving for safety. Think about a wife with an abusive husband, her main concern would be staying out of danger for that day, rather than trying to gain his love.

Include the ideas of love and belongingness One tries to overcome the feeling of loneliness and or alienation. Maslow believed that all humans have a desire to belong to a group, be accepted by others, and to be loved. If one does not believe that he/she is loved by others, then one cannot love self.

Involves one's self-esteem The pride in oneself or self-respect The esteem one gets from others Respect and appreciation that one shows to you Eg. compliments, rewards, recognition.

Once all the needs are met, one begins to need to achieve one's full potential, or self actualization - accomplishing everything he or she strived for.
