Classification and Identification of Fossils Lab # 3

Classification and Taxonomy KingdomAnimalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Carnivora Family Felidae Genus Felis Species domestica

Classification and Taxonomy Developed by Linnaeus in the early 18Th century. Species is the basic unit of the system. It is a binomial (two parts) formal designation for each species. Is composed by the capitalized name of the genus (plural-genera), followed by the uncapitalized name of the species (plural- species).

Body Composition Unicellular Multicellular Monera Protista Fungi Plantae Animalia Kingdom Designation Cellular Organization procaryotic eucaryotic

Kingdom Monera –Bacteria, blue-green algae Kingdom Protista –Phylum Protozoa Class Sarcodina- “amoebas” –Order Foraminiferida- marine amoebas with CaCO 3 skeletons –Order Radiolaria- marine amoebas with opal skeletons Kingdom Fungi –the fungi

Kingdom Monera Bacteria, blue-green algae

Kingdom Protista Order Foraminiferida

Kingdom Protista Order Radiolaria

Kingdom Fungi

Kingdom Plantae- the plant kingdom –Algae- several groups of aquatic plants, some of which secrete calcite or aragonite skeleton. –Phylum Bryophyta- the mosses and liverworts –Phylum Tracheophyta- the vascular plants

Kingdom Plantae Algae Algae are photosynthetic organisms that occur in most habitats. They vary from small, single- celled forms to complex multicellular forms, such as the giant kelps that grow to 65 meters in length.. The US Algal Collection is represented by almost 300,000 accessioned and inventoried herbarium specimens.
