Design Problem (copy into your notebook)  You are part of a design team for a local potato chip company.  The CEO of the company has called upon the design team to design a new bag for their new chip flavor.  It is important to decide on an eye- catching label and name to attract consumers.

 You may not use any existing potato chip names or logos  The final design should include the following: Logo, company name Product name, flavor type Nutrition facts Ingredients Barcode label size 6 inches high x 10 inches wide Motto Phone number or website address Recycle symbol Expiration date Etc. (anything else you research) COPY THIS IN YOUR DESIGN NOTEBOOK (this is your design brief)

Procedure  Students will work in groups of 2  Students will design a bag for a single serving 1oz. bag of chips  Each student will maintain a design notebook of the problem solving steps.  Students will maintain a journal that records progress through the project

Are you ready to begin? 1.We will start with steps 1 and 2 of the design process. 2.Copy information that is in red into your notebook. 3.Complete (do it) what is written in black.

Step 1  Clearly state the problem – in your own words, explain the problem.

Step 2  Collect information – in your own words, explain what you know, and what you need to know  (Consider the problem, requirements, principles of design)

Step 3 – Develop possible solutions  Each student will brainstorm: 3 logo designs – personal logo, a picture that represents you.  On a clean sheet of paper in your design notebook, create 6 boxes as shown:  Draw pictures on the left  Descriptions on the right

Step 3 – Develop possible solutions  Each student will brainstorm on: 3 logo designs 3 names for the potato chip flavor 3 names for the company 3 mottos  Make a list of each set of ideas

Step 4 – final idea 1.Select the best design and draw it FULL SIZE (6" x 10”) on graph paper.  On a blank sheet of paper do the following: Chip name Name of the company Logo design – Colored Motto Leave spaces for nutrition facts, company name, contact, recycle symbol The Crisp Chip Promise

Where to save work in progress  To open PowerPoint 2010 Click on Start, programs, Office, PowerPoint  Save files Go to my documents://

 Students will use Microsoft PowerPoint  Explore using Insert Shapes  Do not use any clipart  Use word art for your potato chip name.

Step 5: Create chip bag in PowerPoint  Set the size by formatting the shape and selecting 6 by 10 inches  Go to Insert shapes, select rectangle  Begin to draw a rectangle from the top left margin. Draw the rectangle based on the size given on your design brief.  This is your label. All your work should be within this rectangle.

 Complete Logo design and chip name  Use arrow from shapes to complete the recycle symbol  Use text box from shapes to complete motto.  Use text box from shapes to complete contact information (address, phone number, web address etc).

Nutrition Facts Serv. Size 1 can _______________ Amount per serving Calories 0 _______________ Total Fat 0g0% Sodium 40mg2% Total Carb 0g0% Protein og _______________ Not a significant source of fat cal. 547667  Decide on ingredients based on flavor, color and caffeine content. Create a box without borders to write all ingredients.  Create a barcode label  Create a nutrition facts label. Format the table to look like the original label. Ingredients: Sugar 5g Protein 5g

When your bag is complete 1.Let teacher check the label size with your measurements 2.Save a copy of the bag in your My Documents folder and drag a copy to your desktop. Your teacher will print a copy from her workstation. 3.Prepare your presentation. Write your script in your design notebook. Concentrate on principles of design. 4.Fold the bag and tape it together like a true potato chip bag. 5.Complete journals and final evaluation in your design notebook.

Instructions: (Copy this information in your Design Notebook) 1.Think of an exciting name and motto for your potato chip. 2.In your Design Notebook, sketch three (3) possible "eye- catching” designs. (These designs should include: potato chipk name, logo design – colored, and motto) 3.Select the best design and draw it FULL SIZE on the 6" x 10" paper. 4.Develop a commercial for your product. Include an explanation of the graphic features and design elements you used. Include all of the following on your final design: Logo, company name Product name, flavor type Nutrition facts Ingredients Barcode label size (ex: 12 fl. oz., 355mL) Motto/Slogan Phone number or website address Recycle symbol Company name
