2 Software Copyright Laws Under the Copyright Law, computer software is defined as a Literary Work (http://www.fast.org.uk/) Ideas and facts are not eligible for copyright protection (http:/www.copyright.gov/) If a work has not been copyright protected or a copyright has expired, the work becomes Public Domain and is free for use by anyone (http:/www.copyright.gov/) A copyright provide authors protection by law for the exclusive right of their original work for a certain period of time (http:/www.copyright.gov/)

3 Software Piracy It is acceptable for Libraries to make copies of software for archival purposes (http://www.mediafestival.org/copyright_chart.pdf) Software licenses depict how many times a software can be installed (http://www.bsa.org/usa/) 23% of all business software in the United States is unlicensed (http://www.bsa.org/usa/) Any violation of a software license in considered Software Piracy (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0SMG/is_n1_v18/ai_202267 48/)

5 Acceptable Use Policy Schools are required to have a Acceptable Use Policy which explain the schools rules for appropriate technology use. 6 What can we do? Have schools educate teachers as an in-service about the importance of copyright laws Have the school’s technology coordinator educate all new employees about copyright laws Include information about copyright laws to new employees as part of their employment package
