 People living in the inner city are more likely to experience higher rates of asthma because of a number of environmental factors, including cockroach allergen. This report on the prevalence of Asthma in New York State measured a number of different factors which lead to the outcome disparities seen in rates of asthma. Most striking (but not so much) is that NYC has a higher discharge rate than the rest of the state. Let's explore some reasons why! Hospital Discharge Rates For Asthma per 100,000 Residents (NYS)

 This graph represents the number of people who responded to a questionnaire on the presence of cockroach within their household, "In the past month have you seen any cockroaches in your home?” Hispanic respondents reported seeing cockroaches the most followed by Black and then Asian/Pacific Islanders. The high rates of pest presence can be attributed to the geographic location of different race/ethnicities within New York City. Minorities are more likely to live in lower-income neighborhoods where housing is built to accommodate large numbers of people at a time.

It was shown that Cockroaches are more likely to be found in areas where things are likely to be packaged in. There is a high concentration of people who live in high rise apartments and that makes for prime living space for cockroaches. High rises are more likely to be more contained than other houses, this keeps the pests in. This also helps to explain why people who live in Urban areas, like Hispanics non-Hispanic blacks have higher rates of asthma and report seeing cockroaches more. There health is a consequence of their environment.

A number of different allergens common to children were looked at in this study with region in the U.S as an important variable. New York and other areas that had a high concentration of people in urban-like areas had high rates of positive tested skin for cockroach allergens.

The rates of asthma vary by geographic are within the U.S. It is concentrated in areas where there are a lot of people. New York City is little different. There are a number of factors that lead to high risks and the acquiring of Asthma, these factors are largely environmental and correlate with the presence of cockroaches within inner-city neighborhoods.
