COLLECTING QUOTES FOR YOUR IN CLASS ESSAY
2
Write out your thesis statement. Ex. The novel “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley is about injustice as shown through the characters of Bernard Marx, John Savage, and Linda. This thesis statement says that the essay will address the “big idea” of INJUSTICE, and will use Bernard Marx, John Savage, and Linda to PROVE it is about injustice. STEP 1
3
Using the thesis statement to guide you, determine the first main supporting point. Ex. The novel “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley is about injustice as shown through the characters of Bernard Marx, John Savage, and Linda. In this thesis it mentions Bernard Marx first, so my first paragraph will discuss how this character provides examples of injustice. Bernard Marx is used to show injustice in “Brave New World.” STEP 2
4
Find quotes and/or specific events to PROVE that this character shows injustice in the book. Ex. Shrek shows the injustice of the world in the movie “Shrek.” Example 1: He is judged by the mob of people as being a nasty ogre without them really knowing him. - Quote to go with ex. 1= “He’ll grind your bones for bread.” Example #2: He is judged by Fiona as being “wrong” even though he saved her. - Quote to go with ex. 2= Shrek says, “You were expecting Prince Charming?” to which Fiona responds “Well, actually yes.” Example #3: He is judged by others before they know him. -“They judge me before they even know me.” STEP 3
5
Using the thesis statement to guide you, determine the second main supporting point. Ex. The novel “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley is about injustice as shown through the characters of Bernard Marx, John Savage, and Linda. Determine the examples and quotes to use for this second main supporting point. STEP 4
6
Using the thesis statement to guide you, determine the third main supporting point. Ex. The novel “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley is about injustice as shown through the characters of Bernard Marx, John Savage, and Linda. Determine the examples and quotes to use for this third main supporting point. STEP 5
