Scottish Technical Standard Through A Fresh Start - Improved Containment Working Group, the Scottish finfish farming industry has signed up to the development of a statutory engineering standard for Scottish fish-farm equipment (pens, nets and moorings) to minimise escapes.
11
What single factor if developed further would promote the security and containment of fish farm stock? Thistle Environmental - Undertaken for the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation, V2, February 2011
12
Please provide examples of best practice which have helped to reduce the threat of an escape incident Thistle Environmental - Undertaken for the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation V2, February 2011
13
Scottish Technical Standard The Scottish Standard will apply to freshwater and marine farms and represents a major step forward for the industry that will serve to minimise escapes.

Scottish Technical Standard Approach (1) Develop a STS that is: Effective Workable Defendable / justifiable / useful Appropriate for Scottish industry Identify knowledge gaps and recommendations Mark Taylor, Thistle Environmental
17
Scottish Technical Standard Approach (2) The STS will: Build on existing standards & protocols, of which NS9415 is the most relevant Be appropriate for Scottish environment Take account of new developments Be enforceable / auditable Mark Taylor, Thistle Environmental

Summary update on ICWG Development of a statutory engineering standard for Scottish fish-farms Scotland is also involved in an international standards working group (ISO 234) developing global aquaculture equipment standards Improved Containment group to commission a desk study on the impact of open pen aquaculture on wild fisheries including frequency, cause and significance of drip escapes. Development of a nationally recognised containment qualification and up-to-date training courses
