You will have time in class and a small group of peers to solve the following problems as a team. Your goal is to follow and apply the problem solving plan (I-C-U-S-C). Keep in mind the various strategies that we have discussed and used in class when attacking these problems. Remember to show all work?

What are the strategies?

Strategies: Estimate Find a pattern Work backwards Draw a picture Make a list Write an equation Guess and check Make a table Work out a simpler problem

Your turn now!

1) Austin wants to ride the metro while in Washington D.C., which costs $1.76. If Austin gives the attendant $2.00, how many different ways can he receive his change?

What was your answer and how did you solve it?

Are you ready for the next challenge?

Review the table and find the missing value: Questions to consider: Is your number getting larger or smaller? Which operations would allow you to get larger or smaller? Can a rule include more than one operation? DistanceTime 12 25 38 4?

What did you do?

3) Jim planted a garden in the shape of a square 32 feet on each side. The garden has a stream on one side, but he plans to build a fence on the other three sides. If he puts a fencepost every 8 feet, how many posts will he need?

What strategy did you use and walk the class through your thought process?

4) What number times 13 equals 182?

Walk us through what you did!

The Cyclone Coaster has 16 cars. Some of them hold 2 passengers and some hold 3 passengers. If there is room for 36 people altogether, how many cars hold 3 passengers?

Volunteers please!

Last one….and it will be a challenge!

6) Dick’s Sporting Goods is running an event that gives aware door prizes. Every 3rd customer receives a free cup and every 5th customer receives a free hat. How many customers will receive both door prizes if 100 people visit the store?

Make me proud guys. Someone share how to attack this one.

A note from the teacher…. The concept of problem solving will not disappear. Love it, live it, breath it…if your goal is to get stronger in mathematics!
