Thesis  Genocide continues to occur in Africa because of colonialism, poverty, government problems, the United Nations, and failed peace agreements.

Colonialism  Boundaries: “Divide and Conquer” Boundaries made to benefit foreign countries Changed original tribal territories

Colonialism  Favoritism: “Divide and Rule” To gain control an alliance is needed One group benefits more than the other  End of Colonialism Independence created chaos and lust for power “The privileged group will naturally do all that they can to politically protect their privilege, while the disadvantaged groups will attempt to change the situation so as to gain their own advantage.”

Poverty  Results of Colonialism One country wealthier due to favoritism  Lack of Education Literacy rate of less than 60% Less history is known, less awareness of issues, no prevention of genocides

Poverty  Incentives Without wealth it’s harder to provide families with essentials When offered rewards (money, food, etc.) doing what is right isn’t easy

Government  Corruption Do not want to stop the genocides “The Government of Sudan has refused to arrest or turn over either of these two men” (Ahmed Haroun and Ali Kushayb)  Leaders Lust for power and control Manipulate facts to create situations favorable for themselves

Government  Differences Political Party Ethnic  Government Policies Employing a particular tribe or ethnicity  Money Economic inequalities and issues “The easy access to natural resources to maintain and fuel rebellions (combined with corporate interests) makes for a nasty combination.”

The United Nations  Did not do their job to help with the genocide until 1999  After the genocide, they admitted their failure  Secretary General apologized to Rwanda and promised to be more aware in the future

Peace Agreements  Comprehensive Peace Agreement To help stop the genocide from continuing to occur in the northern and southern parts of Sudan.  Peace Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Rwanda and the RPF Supposed to settle things and help bring peace to Rwanda The peace agreements are what helped end the genocide in Rwanda.

Abuse of Human Rights  Human Rights Rights you are born with and should be able to have throughout your lifetime “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person” (Article 3)  “Lost Boys” An organization for the people who escaped the massacres happening in their villages.

Rebuilding  Result of Genocide Famine and poverty increase Refugee problems Lack of development  Re-occurring cycle of violence Elevated emotions Tension and hostility

Conclusion  Fix the problem Government  more reliable & trustworthy ○ Better leaders Cooperation ○ Peace Agreements Pro-Active ○ Solve problems before they escalate
