RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 NRLA New Railway Link through the Alpes PROJECTS 2013

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 AlpTransit well known as New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA) is a Swiss federal project for faster north – south rail links across the Swiss Alps. It is composed from 3 sections Zimmerberg Tunnel, Gotthard Tunnel and Ceneri Tunnel PROJECTS 2013

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 Zimmermberg Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel in Switzerland. Is divided into two sections: I and II. Zimmerberg I is about 10 km long and links Zurich with Thalwil. Zimmerberg II is suspended. Part II will bring the length to about 20 km and will link Zurigh with Zug PROJECTS 2013

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 The Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT) is a railway tunnel under construction in Switzerland’s Canto Ticino. It is another part of the Swiss AlpTransit iniziative NRLA. The official start was celebreted on June 2006. Commercial use of the tunnel is expected in 2019 PROJECTS 2013

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 The Gottard Base Tunnel has two parallel single track Bores joined about every 300 metres with Cross cuts PROJECTS 2013

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 -The project comprises two major sections: - The Gotthard axis (new axis) - The Lotschberg axis (existing)

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 The Gotthard axis, with the new Gotthard Base Tunnel at Gotthard, Zimmberg, and Ceneri, is being built under contract from the Swiss Federal Government by the company AlpTransit Gotthard AG

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 The Gotthard Base Tunnel is the world’s longest railway (57 km) The Tunnel is due to open in 2018

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 Its main purpose is to increase total transport capacity across the alpes, expecially for freight, between Germany and Italy. A secondary benefit will be to cut the journey time for passenger train from Zurich to Milan by about an hour and from Zurich and Lugano to 1 hour 40 minutes

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 -Tunnel construction began in 1996. -Drilling operations in the eastern tunnel were completed on 15 October 2010 and in the western tunnel on 23 March 2011. -Total cost of the project is $ 10.3 billion

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 -Five access tunnels were built so that construction could start at five different sites simultaneosly: 1) Erstfeld 2) Amsteg 3) Sedrun 4) Faido 5) Boido

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 Trains can swap tunnels in the two multifanction stations (MFS) at Sedrun and Faido

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 -Access to the Sedrun station site is by a levell access tunnel 1 km long from the valley floor near Sedrun, at the end of which two vertical shafts lead 800 m down to the base tunnel level -A proposal to construct a functioning railway station called Porta Alpina at this site was ruled out because of the smalled population served and the reduction in line capacity that would be caused by trains stopping here

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 The contracts were assigned in sections: -Erstfeld (km 7.4) -Amsteg (11,4 km) -Sedrun (6.8 km) -Faido ((14.6 km) -Boido (16.6 km)

RAILMED A Project for MEDA 2020 PROJECTS 2013 The Lotschberg axis, with the Lotschberg Base Tunnel in the Bernese Alps was constructed by the company BLS AlpTransitLotschberg AG. The 34.6 km long base tunnel was opened in June 2007
