EQ 5: What factors effect Population Structure? 10/31
2
Bell-ringer: 1. Why might a country have both a high CBR and a high CDR? 2. Why might a country have a high CBR, but a low CDR? 3. Why might a country have a high CDR, but a low CBR?
3
Total Fertility Rate (TFR) Average number of children a women will have throughout her childbearing years (15-49)
4
Where do you think the highest and lowest total fertility rate is?
5
Where are the lowest and highest rates? Explain two reasons why you think this true
6
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) The annual number of deaths of infants under 1 yr of age for every 1,000 live births
7
Where do you think the highest and lowest IMR rates are?
8
Which continents have the highest/lowest IMR? Why?
9
Life Expectancy Measures the average number of years a newborn infant can expect to live
10
Where do you think the life expectancy rates are highest/lowest?
11
Where is life expectancy the highest and lowest? Why?
12
REFLECTION Choose an area of the world. Write a summary of its population structure including the following terms: CBR, CDR, NIR, IMR, TFR, Life Expectancy Make sure you explain how and why these are related.
13
EQ 6: What are Population Pyramids and why do they differ?11/3and 11/4 Bell-ringer: What information is this graph displaying? What can you infer from the graph?
14
Vertical axis: Age groups LEFT – MALE; RIGHT-FEMALE Horizontal Axis: Percentage/number people Elderly Dependents Working populations Young dependents
15
What does the pyramid mean? If the pyramid looks like a pyramid, the population is increasing. If the pyramid looks like a V, the population is decreasing. If the pyramid looks like a box, the population is stable (not growing or shrinking).
16
With partner, make 3 observation of this population pyramid
17
Using your 3 observations from the previous population pyramid, compare and contrast them with this population pyramid.
18
Making connections! What is the difference between the two population pyramids? What has happened in the world, that could explain the difference between the two pyramids?
19
Population Pyramids in the US handout Read the helpful hints (on the back) and determine which population pyramid represents each location Put the correct letter in the blank space next to the number Think hard about what each places population would look like based on what is located in that city
20
EQ: What are Population pyramids 2/11 Bell-ringer: Look back in your notes, what information is found on a population pyramid? Explain why two pyramids may look different from one another. (write a 1 paragraph response to the questions above)
21
Create your own population pyramids Each partner will use a different country so you have 2 pyramids to compare and contrast Look at the two tables of information. Which columns of information do you need to make your pyramid? How will you start it? GO! Make your pyramid!!
22
Compare and contrast Look at the two population pyramids. Compare and contrast them with your group. Discuss reasons why they may look different. Make a list of 5 factors that could affect pyramid structures for different countries.
23
TPS: Make a generalization/conclusion about what the pyramid explains about India’s population?
24
War deaths per country since WWII Make 2 observations and 1 inference about the map below
25
Making inferences The Democratic Republic of Congo is the largest war torn country in Africa. There are many child soldiers and constant fighting. Draw a sketch of what Congo’s population pyramid most likely looks like (doesn’t need to be exact, just an estimation)
26
Democratic Republic of Congo 2014
27
Extra materials
28
Look at these population pyramids for different U.S. cities… What do you think is in each of these cities that would cause the population pyramid to look the way it does?
