ARI Informational Meeting The ARI is a granting program 1.Funds research activities that improve the economic efficiency, productivity, profitability and sustainability of California agriculture and its allied industries. 2.Campus submissions a.$75,000 yearly limit b.Multi-year grants (up to 3 yrs) c.Requires cash match (80% of direct) d.No pre-proposal required 3.Systemwide submissions a)$150,000 yearly limit ($75,000 minimum) b)Multi-year grants (up to 3 yrs) c)Requires cash match (100% of total) d)Requires pre-proposal and invitation for full proposal

ARI Informational Meeting 1.Sources of cash match: a.Industry, Federal or State (non-general fund) 2.Match within 6 months of pending grant’s fiscal year 3.Funds deposited in a Cal Poly Foundation account 4.Funds deposited in collaborator’s account if directly related to this project. a.Requires verification and a signed form. b.Form found on ARI website 5.In-kind match is not counted in Campus submissions ARI requires a cash match

ARI Informational Meeting A well-written proposal is required 1.Request for proposals occur each fall (September) a.Due in January b.Matching funds verified by October 2.Same quality and effort as a federal proposal 3.Research suitable to the NSF or NIH is not likely to be suitable to the ARI 4.Research suitable to the USDA is likely to be suitable to the ARI. a.A clear agricultural component must be indicated b.Model systems are not likely to be funded 5.Each proposal is reviewed by a peer committee or off-campus reviewers

7. ARI Informational Meeting Types of Funding Available 1.Competitive Research Grants a.Max $75,000 / year for three years 2.Seed Grants a.Max $5,000 - $10,000 3.Capacity Building a.Equipment / matching programs 4.Meetings / Symposiums

8. ARI Informational Meeting Proposal Review 1.Reviewers are ARI Committee members or off-campus 2.Clear agricultural component / impact 3.Scientific merit 4.Cash match 5.System-wide requires collaboration w/ other ARI / CSU / UC researcher 6.Grantsmanship is important

ARI Informational Meeting Post-award Expectations / Requirements 1.Interim / Annual / Final Reports 2.Participation in Annual Research Showcase held each fall. 3.Peer-reviewed articles are expected a.Acknowledgement of ARI funding in article is expected 4.Dissemination of results to shareholders 5.Non-compliance with the above will preclude further participation in the ARI program
