CALDWELL HALL 6 TH FLOOR DESIGN STUDIO 609 S. LUMPKIN RD. ATHENS GA 30606 The studio is spit up into 3 areas, the area I will be designing is on the eastern side of the building. It has large windows on both the north and east sides and is separated from the rest of the floor by a partition wall.

DETAILS: Client: UGA School of Environment and Design This is the place where seniors do all or most of their studio project work It is currently a well lit semi-dull area without much color or interest

EXSISTING LAYOUT -ceiling height 15’ -flooring carpet -walls concrete block -48 student desks -1 TV in corner -2 couches and an easy chair by TV -entry from south west

ANALYSIS: AESTHETICS Colors in the room- mostly different shades of gray and white Everything currently in the area has a generally horizontal or flat feel to it My overall aesthetic judgment of the existing layout of the room is that it is too institutional. I think adding plants would create a more dynamic and creative environment.

ANALYSIS: LIGHT The part of the studio I am working with is basically a 4 walled rectangle 2 of those walls are almost entirely lined with windows, so the most of the area is very well lit There are however certain areas as depicted in the next slide that receive a lower amount of light.

ANALYSIS: LIGHT FOOT CANDLES AT CRITICAL LOCATIONS

ANALYSIS: MOISTURE Since the studio is on the sixth floor of a well sealed building and has only fixed in place windows there is virtually no effect from outside moisture. If anything the site may be slightly dry but this can be remedied with a correct watering program.

ANALYSIS: TEMPERATURE / AIR MOVEMENT The temperature in the studio is held relatively constant at a range of 65 to 75 degrees. There is little or no air movement in the room besides what is caused by the vents and air conditioning system. The low air movement problem can be solved by adding fans in needed areas. The addition of fans would also generate a calming sound as they blow air through the foliage of plants.

ANALYSIS: CONCLUSION All things considered I think the 6 th floor studio is a perfect candidate for an interiorscape for two reasons Good site conditions An appreciative user group (students, teachers, and staff)

PROPOSED PLANTINGS

INSPIRATION My inspiration for designing an interiorscape for the studio is to soften the environment and create new forms of interest in the room. Working for hours and hours during the day and into the late hours of the night is a reality for most professionals and most good students as well. I believe that by adding plants to the studio would some of the stress generated could be relieved by the surrounding environment.

PLANT TYPES The plants chosen were picked for there durability and aesthetic characteristics. Ficus benjamina Weeping fig Calathea zebrina Zebra plant Hedera helix English ivy Sansevieria trifasciata Mother-in-laws tongue Philodendron selloum Split-leaf Philodendron Aspidistra elatior Cast iron plant Dracaena fragrans 'Massangeana‘ Corn plant Dracaena marginata Dragon plant Ficus pumila Creeping fig
