All living things in the world are divided into 5 kingdoms: 1) Monera: bacteria 2) Protista: algae 3) Fungae: fungus, molds, mushrooms, etc. 4) Plantae: plants 5) Animalia: animals This is our FOCUS *We will be studying the “Animalia” or Animal Kingdom

What is an animal?

While animals are all different, there are certain things they all need to do to survive. What are these things?

ALL Animals need: To breathe To eat food
Keep their internal conditions stable To move To defend themselves To find a home for shelter To have babies

Adaptations: structures or behaviors that animals have to help them survive in their environment.

Here are some examples of questions to ask when you are looking for Animal Adaptations:
What does the animal use to breathe? What does the animal use to eat? How does the animal regulate its body temperature? How does the animal move?

Breath: A bird has lungs and breathes through nostrils above its beak.
Food: A bird has a beak to help itself eat food. Temperature: A bird has feathers to keep itself warm. Movement: A bird has wings to move.

Dolphin Adaptations Breath: blowhole to help it breathe
Food: Dolphins have a mouth and teeth Temperature: Dolphins have blubber to keep them warn Movement: Dolphins have fins to help them move and balance themselves.

Movement: tree frogs have sticky toes that help them climb
Food: have long, sticky tongues that they use to catch prey Self-Defense: can hide their blue markings when they sleep so their skin can camouflage to help them protect themselves.

Take a moment to look at the animal on your desk. Write down at least five adaptations that your animal has that helps it survive and be healthy.
