What is the FNSSP? The First Nation Student Success Program is an INAC proposal-driven initiative that provides support for improved learner outcomes in K-12 schools on-reserve. The goal of the program is to support First Nation educators plan and make improvements in three priority areas: literacy, numeracy and student retention. The funding supports the development of the following 3 key components: School success plans Student learning assessments: standardized testing based on provincial standards Performance measurement: development of performance goals and indicators as well as school information systems.

NAN submitted a proposal as the umbrella organization and is receiving and disbursing the funds. KERC is coordinating the development and delivery of programs and services to each of the participating First Nations in the Sioux Lookout District (every community in the District except Sandy Lake who submitted and received funding for their own proposal).

FNSSP Year 1 Work Plan Review and begin development of school success plans Complete 5 school reviews before the end of March Initiate collective PD on 1 literacy strategy Support the hiring of community liaison workers for FNSSP (cost-sharing with K-net)

Start to support communities that are ready to begin implementing their school success plans Complete CTBS testing in all communities Start discussion on indicators of success Start to liaise with EQAO with the goal of developing a northern version of the EQAO test

Performance Indicators Core indicators will be developed. Proposal guidelines stipulate that the following be included and tracked: monthly attendance rates number of teaching days graduation rate, drop-out rate literacy and numeracy standardized test results. A more holistic approach to performance indicators will be developed that will include other indicators in addition to the standard core ones.
