1933 SYLLABUS
2
WHY WAS THE MODEL COURSE REPLACED THERE WERE OTHER SYLLABUSES – 1904, 1909 AND 1919 IMPOSED BY THE WAR OFFICE COMMAND STYLE OF TEACHING WAS UNSUITABLE FOR CHILDREN THERAPEUTIC APPROACH WAS CALLED FOR WHICH ALLOWED PLAY RATHER THAN SOLDIER- LIKE ACTIVITIES DR GEORGE NEWMAN INTERESTED IN THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF EXERCISE TEACHERS WANTED TO TRAIN RATHER THAN NCOs
3
DR GEORGE NEWMAN APPOINTED AS CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER WITHIN THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. AS A MEDICAL MAN, HE WAS INTERESTED IN THE HEALTH GIVING/THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS OF EXERCISE. THE PURPOSE OF PHYSICAL TRAINING IS NOT TO PRODUCE GYMNASTS, BUT TO PROMOTE AND ENCOURAGE THE HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE BODY.
4
NEW EMPHASIS AS TIME WENT ON……… AN INCREASE IN THERAPEUTIC ELEMENTS – TO PROMOTE AND ENCOURAGE THE HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE BODY. A CHANGE IN SOCIAL ATTITUDE – THE BEGAIN TO APPRECIATE THE VALUE OF PLAYING GAMES
5
BACKGROUND THE INDUSTRIAL DEPRESSION OF THE 1930s MEANT THAT WORKING CLASS WERE UNEMPLOYED. NEVER WAS THE SOCIAL CLASS SYSTEM MORE CLEARLY DEFINED – MORE SECONDARY SCHOOLS WERE BEING BUILT FOR WORKING-CLASS CHILDREN. IT WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS DEPRESSION THAT THE LAST BOARD OF EDUCATION SYLLABUS WAS PRODUCED, BUT IT WAS A HIGHLY RESPECTED PUBLICATION AND HAS BEEN RECOGNISED AS THE WATERSHED BETWEEN THE BEST OF THE PAST AND REVOLUTIONARY DEVELOPMENTS YET TO COME.
6
A BIG SHIFT BETWEEN THE SYLLABUSES OF THE PAST AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION OF THE FUTURE. THE SYLLABUS HAD ONE SECTION FOR THE UNDER 11s AND ONE FOR THE OVER 11s THE HADOW REPORT OF 1926 IDENTIFIED THE NEED TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN AGES FOR PHYSICAL TRAINING.
7
DR GEORGE NEWMAN – THIS WAS THE LAST SYLLABUS TO BE PUBLISHED UNDER HIS DIRECTION. THIS WAS A DETAILED, HIGH QUALITY AND HIGHLY RESPECTED SYLLABUS. STILL SET OUT IN A SERIES OF TABLES FROM WHICH TEACHERS PLANNED THEIR LESSONS. EMPHASIS ON SKILLS AND POSTURE. HOWEVER, THE RECOGNITION OF GYMNASTICS AND GAMES SKILLS WAS A MAJOR STEP FORWARD.
8
THE BIGGEST CHANGE WAS THE INTRODUCTION OF GROUP WORK. PREVIOUS SYLLABUSES EVERYBODY DID THE SAME THING AT THE SAME TIME! REFER TO P688 FOR TABLE FROM THE 1933 SYLLABUS. NEWMAN FELT THAT GOOD NOURISHMENT, EFFECTIVE MEDICAL INSPECTION AND TREATMENT AND HYGIENIC SURROUDINGS WERE ALL NECESSARY FOR GOOD HEALTH AS WELL AS A COMPREHENSIVE SYSTEM OF PHYSICAL TRAINING….
9
WHAT DID IT CONSIST OF…. OBJECTIVES: -PHYSICAL FITNESS THERAPEUTIC RESULTS GOOD POSTURE GOOD PHYSIQUE DEVELOPMENT OF MIND AND BODY CONTENT: ATHLETICS, GYMNASTICS AND GAMES SKILLS GROUP WORK. 10
WHY WAS THIS SYLLABUS REPLACED? IT WAS REPLACED IN THE 1950s PHYLOSOPHY WAS CHANGING – MORE HOLISTIC APPROACH WAS SOUGHT DESIRE TO USE FEWER PRESCRIPTIVE TABLES AND USE MORE CREATIVITY MORE WOMEN TEACHERS WHO WANTED DIFFERENT MOVEMENT STYLE APPROACH POST-WAR INVITED NEW GYMNASIA TO BE BUILT
