Not all Puerto Ricans wanted independence, some wanted statehood. During the Spanish and American War Puerto Rico was controlled by the US Military Foraker Act – Ended military rule and set up a civil government. The act gave the president of the Untied States the power to appoint Puerto Rico’s governor

Cuba was independent The American military stayed after the war. Marti feared the US would take over where Spain left off. The American Military provided food and clothing for thousands of families.

Platt Amendment ◦ Cuba could not make treaties that might limit its independence or permit a foreign power to control any part of its territory ◦ The United States reserved the right to intervene in Cuba ◦ Cuba was not to go into debt ◦ The United States could buy or lease land on the island for naval stations and refueling stations ◦ Lasted 31 years ◦ Cuba became a protectorate – country whose affairs are partially controlled by a stronger power

Outraged by the Treaty of Paris Philippine-American War ◦ Emilio Aguinaldo starts a revolt in 1899 ◦ The rebellion was put down after 3 years ◦ 20,000 Filipino rebels died and 4,000 US soldiers died. ◦ Set up similar to Puerto Rico

Philippines was seen as a gate way to Asia, especially China China was seen as a potential market for American Products (remember looking to sell excess goods) China was split up amongst many European nations. John Hay issues Open Door Notes ◦ The notes were letters addressed to the leaders of imperialist nations proposing that the nations share their trading rights with the United States. ◦ Basically no one power would have a monopoly and it was accepted by the other imperialist powers.

Boxer Rebellion ◦ China had its freedom but was dominated by Europeans. ◦ Chinese formed secret groups to rid the country of foreigners (ie Boxers) ◦ Boxer Rebellion – Boxers killed missionaries and other foreigners ◦ Britain, France, Germany and Japan joined 2,500 American troops and marched on the Chinese capital. It was put down in two months.
