2. History The royal observatory is home to Greenwich mean time and the prime meridian line. It was founded by Charles II in 1675. It has been decided that the official starting point for each new day, year and millennium (at the stroke of midnight GMT as measured from the Prime Meridian).

GMT is sometimes called Greenwich Meridian Time because it is measured from the Greenwich Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Greenwich is the place from where all time zones are measured.
