History The royal observatory is home to Greenwich mean time and the prime meridian line. It was founded by Charles II in 1675. It has been decided that the official starting point for each new day, year and millennium (at the stroke of midnight GMT as measured from the Prime Meridian).

Longitude and latitude longitude is the angle east or west of the prime meridian (an imaginary line running from north to south through Greenwich, England). Latitude and longitude are imaginary lines drawn on maps to easily locate places on the Earth. Latitude is distance north or south of the equator that is the imaginary circle around the Earth halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. Both are measured in terms of the 360 degrees (symbolized by °) of a circle.

The Equator is the line of 0° latitude, the starting point for measuring latitude. equator The latitude of the North Pole is 90° N, and that of the South Pole is 90° S. The latitude of every point in between must be some degree north or south, from 0° to 90°. One degree of latitude covers about 69 miles (111 kilometres).

Longitude is measured in degrees east or west of the prime meridian. This means one half of the world is measured in degrees of east longitude up to 180°, and the other half in degrees of west longitude up to 180°. Did you know that in the planetarium you can’t get any phone signal? (its because of all the copper).

Time is measured by the rotation of the Earth and its path as it orbits the Sun. W HAT IS G REENWICH T IME (GMT)? Greenwich, England has been the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) since 1884. GMT is sometimes called Greenwich Meridian Time because it is measured from the Greenwich Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Greenwich is the place from where all time zones are measured.
