Welcome to Curriculum Night! Mrs. Seymour 5 th Grade

Expectations Students will be respectful to teachers, other students and school property Students will copy down homework in their planners at the end of every day Students will be responsible to turn in homework and classwork on time Students will acknowledge classroom rules, and understand that consequences will occur when rules are broken

Other Expectations All books need to be covered Hard cover: Brown paper bag or a pocket cover Soft cover: Clear contact paper Students need to be in full uniform at all times- please refer to uniform policy Gym will be every Wednesday *

Homework Homework will be posted daily on my Teacher Web Science, Spanish, and Honors Math homework will be posted on those teachers pages** All grades will be posted on Cornerstone grades will be posted within 5 days of assignment due or test given

Assessments Quizzes and Tests Homework Projects Exit tickets & Classwork

Grading System Summative Assessments 45% Quizzes 25% Classwork/participations 20% Homework 10% =Total 100%

Language Arts Grading In Language arts the weighting is fixed and is as follows: 40% composition and writing 40% grammar 20% spelling =100%

New York State Tests English Language Arts test: April 5 th, 6 th, and 7 th Math tests: April 13 th and 15 th

Parent Communication I will post a weekly newsletter on Teacher Web as well as a paper copy sent home with your child. Newsletter will consist of: What we are working on and will work on Projects and tests coming up Events to be aware of Questions, comments or concerns can be made through email and/or phone call “A positive parent-teacher relationship helps your child feel good about school and be successful in school” -Diane Levin, Ph.D., professor of education at Wheelock College.

Math- 5 th Over the course of the year we will cover: Place Value Multiplying whole numbers Divide by a one-digit divisor Divide by a two-digit divisor Add and subtract decimals Multiplying and dividing decimals Expressions and patterns Fractions and decimals Add and subtracting decimals Multiplying and diving decimals Measurement Geometry

Math Extra Help I will be staying after school on Tuesdays- for 5 th grade for any students who want/need extra help.

Religion Miss Vaczi will be teaching Religion this year while I will be teaching a double Social Studies to the other 5 th grade class.

Social Studies Unit 1* Early Life, East and West Unit 2* Connections Across Continents Unit 3* Colonial Life in North America Unit 4* American Revolution We will be working with vocabulary and cause and effect, using and creating time lines and doing group work, research and technology to extend on lessons from the text.

Spelling/Vocabulary Vocabulary and spelling tests alternating every other week Grammar Nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections, sentences, punctuation and capitalization, and diagramming Writing Personal narratives, how-to articles, business letters, descriptions, book reports, creative writing, persuasive writing, and research reports ELA

ELA- continued The students will be learning how to Draw inferences, determine theme and summarize, compare and contrast story elements, connect across text, how to close read, and work with language We will be using the Reading Street text that is aligned with the common core it will be covering different types of texts in addition to Engage NY Modules fiction, non-fiction, poetry, tall tales, autobiographies, biographies, persuasive texts, expository texts, historical fiction, etc. *This will teach comprehension, fluency, speaking and listening, language, and writing

Technology We will be using iPads, the computer lab, and the SmartBoard to create projects and presentations over the course of the year. Some projects for this year: We will be creating an iMovie to review the vocabulary words PowerPoint presentations for research projects SmartNotebook/SmartBoard to create interactive math activities

Science/ Spanish Science: New this year, students will be going to Mrs. Canfield every day for Science instruction. Spanish: This will be another great year with Mrs. Vallejo! Both teachers are here tonight and look forward to meeting and discussing their curriculum with you.
