The Energy Equation Energy equation: the food (or energy) we take in should closely match the effort we put out Energy storage = Energy intake – Energy output

Basal and Resting Metabolic Rate Metabolic rate (MR) Measures energy that needs to be consumed in order to sustain essential bodily functions Affected by age, sex, weight, lean muscle mass, and general level of physical fitness Two measures are distinguished: Basal metabolic rate (BMR) Measures MR under rigorous conditions Resting metabolic rate (RMR) Measures MR under less rigorous conditions Most common measurement in practice Calculating MR M- Weight (lbs) x 11= MR F- Weight (lbs) x 10 = MR Calculate the MR for a 130lbs woman. MR= 130 x 10 1300 calories/day

Estimating Daily Caloric Need from Metabolic Rate Activity Factors Sedentary= 1.4 Moderately Active= 1.6 Highly Active= 1.8 Estimate daily Caloric Need from MR M Weight (lbs) x 11 x activity factor= energy ouput F Weight (lbs) x 10 x activity factor= energy output Calculate the daily caloric needs for a highly active 125 lbs female athlete 125x10x1.8 =2250c/day

Calculating Energy Balance Calculate the energy balance for a highly active 128 lbs woman who has a daily caloric intake of 2000 kcal/day Energy intake= 2000kcal/day Energy output =128x10x1.8 =2304 Therefore the individual may lose weight

Harris-Benedict Equation Used to calculate your RMR Separate calculations for males and females Males: RMR = 66.5 + (5 H) + (13.7 W) – (6.8 A)* Females: RMR = 665 + (1.9 H) = (9.5 W) – (4.7 A)* *H = height in centimetres W = weight in kilograms A = age in years Bob weighs 68kg, is 168 cm tall and is 22 years old. What is his RMR RMR= 66.5 + (5x168) + (13.7 x 68) – (6.8 x 22) =66.5+ 804+ 931.6+-149.6 =1,653 c/day
