♫ Jazz originated around 1895 in New Orleans ♫ Originally it was a mixture of blues and marching band music ♫ Usually played on old U.S Army instruments like the cornet or marching drums ♫ It is also distinguished through the use of improvisation ♫ The European and African music culture joined together and created a new style of jazz The Origins of Jazz!

♫ The twenties were also known as the ‘jazz age’ ♫ The New Orleans musicians moved from New Orleans to Chicago and created the ‘Chicago Style’ ♫ Lots of musicians from Chicago then moved to New York, which became a hub for jazz ♫ The saxophone had been known to evoke close, intimate dancing and many people were shocked by its amazing sound Jazz in the 20s

♫ Many older people blamed jazz to be a bad influence on the younger generation ♫ With the help of radio, jazz began to spread quickly throughout America ♫ Lots of clubs and speakeasies (illegal pubs) helped jazz bands become famous and featured many of their songs

♫ The Great Gatsby takes place during the summer of 1922 ♫ Fitzgerald coined the phrase ‘the jazz age’ that same year to describe the flamboyant ‘anything goes’ era ♫ Fitzgerald showed the excesses of the 1920s ♫ A flourishing age in which many Americans came to enjoy the blessings of consumerism and excess, only to see it all crash with the great depression that came in 1929 Jazz in the Great Gatsby
