Roaring 20’s? The 1920s are known as the Roaring 20’s because of the prosperous economy, as well as the modernization of America today.

Henry Ford Ford introduced the assembly line as a way to boost output. – Workers having special jobs and parts to work on. – Mass production: large output of goods produced. – First car: Model T

Radio and Movies Both of these became popular forms of entertainment and communication Ex; Charlie Chaplin – Silent film actor Radios broadcasted news, baseball games, weather, etc

Jazz Music Most popular music style during this time period!

Music and Literature Harlem Renaissance Time period in which African-American culture saw a rise in their contributions to the arts – Ex: Art, Music, Literature – Occurred in Harlem, NY Tin Pan Alley – Area in Manhattan that housed many musicians/songwriters and music publishers of the time.

Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington Louis Armstrong – Famous trumpet player “scat” – Known for using “scat” Duke Ellington – Well-known composer – Over 2,000 songs credited to him

Langston Hughes Known as the literary voice of the Harlem Renaissance – Poet, author, playwright, columnist, and even social advocate

Scopes-Monkey Trial Trial on the teaching of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in public schools. Tennessee teacher was arrested for teaching it and put on trial. – Dayton, TN Eventually found guilty but only fined $100.00. John Scopes
