Catalyst Label each of the following as either physical (P) or chemical (C) change: 1. Breaking a pencil in half 2. A nail rusting 3. A match burning 4. Making Kool-Aid 5. A banana rotting 6. Mixing a salad
3
Today’s Agenda Catalyst Physical/Chemical Change Labs Intro to Density Work Time Exit Question
4
Today’s Objectives SWBAT observe physical and chemical changes. SWBAT calculate the density of solids and liquids.
5
Physical and Chemical Change Lab Stations There are SIX stations Each group will go to each station for 5 minutes Since we have more than six groups, you will have off-stations During these off-stations, you will be required to work on a Chemistry Haiku (5-7-5) You must include the Haiku in order to get credit for the day’s work, so I expect you to be working the entire time
6
What is Density?? Key Point #1: Density is the relationship between mass and volume
7
MUSCLE MUSCLE vs. FAT
8
Formula for Density What is the unit for mass? What are the different units for volume? So what are the possible units for density? Grams (g) Rectangular-shaped solids: cm 3 Irregular solids and Liquids: mL g/cm 3 OR g/mL 1 cm 3 = 1 mL
9
Density Formula Work How do we find density (D)?
10
Density Formula Practice 1. The mass of a can of air freshener is 112 g. The volume of the can is 118 mL. What is the density? 2. The mass of a bottle of Shout Ultra Gel is 246 g. The volume of the bottle is 200 mL. What is the density?
11
What if we already know density? How to find mass (M)? How to find volume (V)? M = D x V V = M D
12
Density Formula Practice 1. The density of a Kit-Kat bar is 0.93 g/mL. The volume of the Kit-Kat is 10 mL. What is the mass? 2. The mass of a bottle of a Hershey’s bar is 43 g. The density of the Hershey’s bar is 1.72 g/mL. What is the volume?
13
Class Work Time You may work on your Homework until the Exit Question. Ask questions now if you have them!
14
Exit Question 1. What is the density of an object that has a mass of 23.5 grams and volume of 14.2 mL? 2. What is the mass of an object with a volume of 3.2 cm 3 and a density of 2.0 g/cm 3 ?
