Mountain Men and the Rendezvous Jim Beckwourth- lived an interesting life Born into slavery and set free by his owner At the age of 25 he went west with fur traders. While there he was adopted by the Crow tribe He found a valley that would become known as the Beckwourth pass into Northern California. Through the Sierra Nevada Mts. He would set up a ranch and trading post

The Rendezvous William Henry Ashley created a trading arrangement called the rendezvous Rendezvous- individual trappers came to a prearranged site and time. Traders would buy supplies from the easterner businessmen with Beaver pelts. Beaver pelts were worth the most Why? Rendezvous were like big parties

Mexico gains it’s independence 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain, opening it’s borders to America. William Becknell set out with hardware, china, clothes, and other goods for Santa Fe. For which he sold and made a large profit. This would prompt a large number of traders to make their way to Santa Fe

Santa Fe Trail Becknell’s trail would be know as the Santa Fe Trail Two different routes What made them different? 1.Had plenty of water but took much longer to get there 2.Had little water but it was much faster Mule ears Why would anyone chance the shorter route?

The Oregon Trail Connected Independence, MO to the Oregon Territory Some of the first immigrants to the territories were missionaries Word of rich land, and tall tales of large pigs and constant sunshine attracted people to migrate. 1843 as many as 1,000 people traveled, the next year twice that many traveled to the Oregon Territory.

Mormon Trail Moved West for different reasons What were they? Religious freedom Lived in closed communities, worked hard, shared their goods, and prospered 1 st leader Joseph Smith was killed by anti- Mormon mob in Illinois. Polygamy- Husband is able to have more than one wife Very few practice it today. Brigham Young would be next leader

Mormon Trail Brigham Young would lead 1,600 followers west to the Mexican territory. Settled near the Great Salt Lake Worked hard to build dams and canals in order to make their new desert home bloom It wouldn’t have worked unless they worked together

The Trails Individually list the supplies a person would take with them on the Santa Fe Trail Individually list the supplies a person would take with them on the Oregon Trail Individually list the supplies a person would take with them on the Mormon Trail Get with a partner and share your list and write any supplies that you have not listed. Share those lists with the class. Why certain supplies for certain trails?
