1. All living things are made from the basic chemical ingredients. -Dogs like other organisms are made up of what we call DNA. -DNA is what makes the dog have a certain eye color and be a certain size. -There are lots of different breeds of dogs because not all their DNA is lined up the same.  Adenine  Thymine  Cytosine  Guanine What DNA is made up of:

2. Living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic structural units of life. -Dogs of course like every other living thing are made up of cells. -Cells form the tissues and the muscle. Then the tissue goes and forms the organs which dogs need to survive. Ex. Heart, Lungs, Intestines.

3. Living things require water, and a source of energy. -Dogs need to water to stay hydrated, it helps regulate their body temperature, and it helps their digestive system work properly. -The food they eat is usually very high in protein to help build muscles.

4. Living things have the ability to reproduce. -Dogs can reproduce. -Female dogs have heat cycles. This means they can only be bred about three times a year. -The amount of puppies per litter depends on the type and size of the dog.

5. Living things all have a life span and will die. -The life span of a dog depends on what species they are. -Often dogs do not live out their full life span because of disease and sickness. -There are lots of diseases that dogs can catch that are very contagious. Distemper, which affects the respiratory and the nervous system. Parvo, affects the bowels. Hepatitis, which like in humans affects the liver.

6. Living things respond to their surroundings. -How dogs demonstrate homeostasis depends on the breed. -For example, Golden retrievers. In the fall they start growing a coat of very long and shaggy hair, this is too protect them from the cold in winter. Than when spring comes around they shed their hair so they can be comfortable in the warm weather of summer. -Dogs also pant when they are hot, and are trying to regulate their body temperature.

7. Living things have the ability to move. -Dogs have the ability to run very fast, and tire slowly. -The amount of exercise a dog needs to stay healthy, depends on the breed of dog. -Dogs are amount used as hunting dogs, or tracking dogs so they are designed to move.

8. Living things have the ability to repair injuries. -Dogs often lick their wounds to speed up healing. -But they can get Lick granuloma from excessive licking. -Many cultures believe that a dogs saliva has healing abilities, but this is just because oral wounds heal faster than skin outside the mouth.

9. Living things can undergo change over time. -Adaption's are modifications that make an organism suited to its way of life. -Dogs grow long hair when its cold, and shed it when the weather gets warmer. -Dogs also have toe pads to protect their feet from rough surfaces. -Some dogs also have water repellent fur for swimming. -Each breed of dog was intentionally bred for some purpose or task.
