For some people work is a valuable part of life Work ethic: An attitude towards work that says, “I value honest work, and I want to work hard to take care of myself and my family and to have a good life.”

Two basic kinds of work exist for families. 1: Household work- the work a family does in the home in order to keep up with day-to- day living 2: Income-Producing work- work that provides money for needs and wants

In the traditional approach the Mother was responsible for daily care of the home. Father’s responsibility was taking care of the finances.

Many women have income producing careers. Men and women share household responsibilities. Women still do about two-thirds of everyday jobs at home. Studies have shown that women who are married have two kids and are employed work an average of about 75-80 hours a week total.

Lack of family training: Cal has a poor attitude. He doesn’t get along with coworkers and cant take responsibility. Cal is missing certain qualities that he should have learned while growing up. Home pressures: Allyson is a single parent with two children. She often stays up late to get things done at home. She feels the pressure of trying to manage a busy life. She’s tired and not very alert at work.

Family Problems: Trevor’s wife recently moved out of the family home, taking their son with her. Trevor is depressed and his emotional state is fragile. He’s distracted at work.

Job loss: Pete lost his job, leaving his family with little income. He’s trying to find another one but feels frustrated and worried, which is apparent to his family. Relocation: Karen has been offered a job transfer. She and her family must decide whether they want to move. Work challenges: Corbin is an emergency medical technician. Although he likes the work, his family often feels the emotional strain.

Difficult work schedules: As a minister, Rebecca is often called to duty at all hours of the day and night. Her family never knows for sure when she’ll be around. Work Stress: Tamika works with very tight deadlines on her job. She often carries her tension and frustrations home with her.

Employer support: Employers are making changes to appeal to peoples wants and needs. Leave of absence: provides time off from work to use for some purpose

Alternative Work schedules: Providing people with suitable hours to have time for themselves and with family. Compressed work schedules: three-day weekends are another option. An employee works 4, 10 hour work day a week but gets a 3 day weekend.

In home care: most convenient, and often most expensive is provided in the child's home. Family child-care homes: the child goes to someone else's home for care. May be a neighbor or relatives home. The cost varies. Child-care centers: cared for at a special facility that has organized activities for children. Some have a sliding fee scale that matches the fee to the persons income.

Looking through magazines or online find an ad that has services or products that could be purchased as a substitute for household work. Answer the following questions: 1.What do these products and services cost? 2.Do they have other drawbacks? 3.When might it be worthwhile for a family to use these? 4.Is this beneficial to the family? If not what can they use besides the product to help with household work?
