Lesson 2 The Hole in the Dike

Windmill wind/mill A mill or machine that uses the power of the wind to turn the vanes or sails. Peter loved to look at the old windmills turning slowly.

Dikes A thick wall built to hold back water. The land is kept safe and dry by high, strong walls called dikes.

Trickling trick/ling Flowing drop by drop. He saw a small stream of water trickling through a hole in the dike below.

Numb Having no feeling. His fingers grew cold and numb.

Rumbling Rum/bling Make a deep, heavy, continuous sound It was the milk cart rumbling down the road.

Flooded A great flow of water over dry land To fill much higher than usual Without these dikes the land would be flooded and everything would be washed away.

Gurgling Making a sound like a bubbling liquid Page 122
