Good Morning! Starter: What are the benefits and drawbacks to Nuclear fusion? Today we are going to… –Pass around the gradesheet. –Watch a historic video showing the Atomic Bomb. –See a model of the reaction that goes on in a nuclear power plant. –Learn how power plants that we use today work
2
The other type of Nuclear Reaction is Fission. This is more common on the planet This is the splitting of an atom! When or where is this done? –Nuclear Power Plants (we will talk more about these later) –The atomic BombThe atomic Bomb
3
The Historic View of the Atomic Bomb Link
4
Do you think that Scientists should be held responsible for the way their discoveries are used? If Yes, Why? If No, Why not?
5
So what is the reaction that is going on in a Atomic Bomb or a Nuclear Power Plant?
6
Some times you just need to see it in motion. Website
7
What a plant looks like
8
Nuclear Power Plant Activity Click the Active Art button to open a browser window and access Active Art about nuclear power plants. - Nuclear Energy
9
How does a Nuclear Power Plant go from Nuclear Reaction to Electricity? The heat from fission reactions boils water. The steam then turns a turbine (this is like a windmill) The turbine moves a magnet to generate electricity.
10
Why do they need Control Rods? Link on Chain Reaction This is what happens in a nuclear bomb, it is an uncontrolled reaction, it is allowed to spiral out of control. This is also what happened in Russia and almost happened here in America. Chernobyl Video ChernobylVideo Three Mile Island
11
Now the time for a choice has come Before you decide, think of this Nuclear Power includes Fusion and Fission There is much destruction but there is much promise too.
12
If you choose to be For Nuclear Power your power source Doesn’t produce greenhouse gases Fusion is a huge plus (no waste, no meltdown)
13
If you are against Nuclear Power There is the safety factor with the possibility of another meltdown The other issue is used fuel rods also known as Radioactive Waste
14
You will have to choose a side now and we will have a debate Your "team" will decide who will go first and explain why they are right One person will speak at a time using the microphone, speaking for no more than 30 seconds at a time Then the other side will Respond.
15
Guidelines of Debate Please do not raise your voices (that's what the microphone is for : ) This is a discussion of ideas NOT an attack on each other Hold your ideas at arms length when someone attacks your ideas, remember they are not attacking you. Don't let it get personal.
16
We will start with Flip coin to see who goes first. Timer
