Spring Term Curriculum Evening Year 1 Monday 12 January 2015

Spring 1 – Digging for Victory O Explore life in Britain during World War 2. O Any family memorabilia would be very welcome, chance for children to share knowledge and personalise their learning. O Reason for War is discussed in a very simple way, we focus on differences for children – then and now. O We do not talk about the Nazi regime, concentration camps, Anne Frank etc.

Spring 1 Curriculum

Spring 2 Land of the Giants O Largely focuses on Dinosaurs. O Also explore stories and poems with giants in – discover and apply appropriate vocabulary. O Science discovers The Animal Kingdom – which does include humans. O Trip will be to Twycross Zoo this year to embed Science work.

Spring 2 Curriculum

Reading O Focus on comprehension, predicting events, describing characters and settings. O This language supports the children when writing. O Please complete home reading diaries in correct week – we will aim to write Week Beginning at top of page! O Remember to read regularly, helps if all children in group have read the same amount. O Keywords – next slide!

Keywords Oxford reading words go up to stage 5. Children do need to look at these words regularly but only for short amounts of time. Remember children need to be secure with their keywords before moving on to the next reading stage – don’t leave it till the end of stage to try and learn them! We teach and test key words in a random order, remember this at home too. High Frequency Words ( list in front of home diaries) – children need to be able to read, and write the first 100 by end of year 1.

Phonics Real Words Pseudo Words big zat hurt corb shouts theek stripe lipe brighter smowder o Children have now been introduced to all phase 3 and phase 5 phonemes. o Each child will be secure at different stages – we continue to support their personal learning journey. o All children will take part in phonic screening check – usually at start of Summer Term. This term is when we all need to help the children feel confident to apply their phonic knowledge. o There will be a mix of phase 3 and 5 in check and a mix of real and pseudo words; more able readers can make errors with pseudo words.

Writing O Joining handwriting will be introduced to majority - sometimes presentation becomes a little messy while they perfect joining letters in correct places! O Length of writing – children are expected to write in more detail, quality sentences – using connectives, adjectives and verbs. O We will explore story writing, recounts and instructions this term. O Children are taught to ‘box up’ a story – using Drama, puppets, speech as well as writing. O Punctuation, Grammar and Vocabulary takes a stronger focus this term. O We do not allow children to use a rubber at school – they are encouraged to re-read work and make alterations. A small x at end of a word indicates child has realised a word is incorrect.

Mathematics O Large emphasis on place value – followed by application in addition / subtraction / measurement / data. (teen and ty) O Keep practising number bonds – help children use vocabulary and recognise patterns. O Remember Maths home diaries are primarily there as an opportunity for communication, don’t feel pressured to complete. O Time – next slide!

Time o Tell the time using an analogue clock; children often want to wear a watch to school – please note if they don’t keep it on, it will be removed till end of day. o Focus on o’clock and half past. o New curriculum is about applying in depth, rather than moving on – understanding seconds, minutes, hours, direction clock moves in, recognising duration. o Discuss time in relation to children’s daily routine – use appropriate language e.g. 7 o’clock is bedtime. o Days of week, months of year, seasons – children need to know order and be able to write the days of the week. o Vocabulary associated with time - tomorrow, yesterday, week, weekend, before, after etc.

Events O Parents Evening – 19 and 20 January. O VE Day party: ‘dressed as a 1940’s child’ – 13 February. O Twycross Zoo trip – 10 March O Year 1 Easter Assembly - 25 March O Forest School- 12 th February and 23 rd February. O Library Visits – 26 th January.
