Promise of mHealth and Interoperability in Information System June, 2011 Copyright ©2011 BRAC ICT

Agenda 2  What is BRAC’s involvement in health care domain?  What are the opportunities?  What mHealth promises for us?  How to translate mHealth promises into benefits?  How do we go about interoperability in Information System? Copyright ©2011 BRAC ICT

What is BRAC’s involvement in health care domain? 3Copyright ©2011 BRAC ICT Essential Health Care Improve maternal, neonatal & child Health and nutrition Reduce vulnerability to and control infectious and common diseases Reaching over 100 m in Bangladesh TB MNCH Limb Center Shushasthya Malaria HIV/AIDS ARI Alive & Thrive

What are the opportunities? 4Copyright ©2011 BRAC ICT An average increase of 1.78% per month* 995,560 Internet users as of August 31, 2010; 0.6% of the population** Source: *BTRC; **Internet World Stat

What mHealth promises for us? 5 In Bangladesh context, we can categorize the following way: o Electronic health record o Laboratory information management o Pharmacy information o Patient Registration and scheduling o Monitoring and Evaluation o Clinical decision o Patient reminder o Research and data collection Effective and efficient way to provide health care services at low cost Time savings and ability to mobilize resources Increases data transparency and authenticity Decreases the barriers to access information Copyright ©2011 BRAC ICT

How to translate mHealth promises into benefits? 6 Consider interoperability “A term simply used to describe the mechanism to exchange meaningful information among separate systems where each system talk to each other in a uniform way ” Interoperable EHR (Electronic Health Records) are the most important enabling tools on the road to patient centered care, a lifeline for continuity of care and support to mobility of patients. Interoperability is not just a technical and standardization challenge. It involves as well leadership, decisions about and investment in political, institutional, organizational, legal and market issues. Copyright ©2011 BRAC ICT

How do we go about interoperability in IT? 8 Establish clear and realistic program goals Awareness of solid knowledge about the needs on the ground and of the intended beneficiaries. Overcome the “innovation silos’ Pull together related active subject matter experts Standardization of mHealth domain / virtual ground rules Semantic Interoperable approach using Universal Data Element Framework (UDEF) National mHealth data exchange portal Robust System Contribution from public-private technical experts Copyright ©2011 BRAC ICT

Summary 9 mHealth will bring revolution in our health care services only with proper execution plan A successful mHealth implementation requires effective collaboration Given the ecosystem, mHealth can assure effective and efficient low-cost health care services for urban and rural population Semantic interoperability should be part of our mHealth roll out plan Need to think beyond just collecting data from ground levels Copyright ©2011 BRAC ICT
