It is a transparent watch glass like membraneous tissue which forms the front 1/6 of the eye ball It lacks blood vessels (avascular) and thus is transparent ie., allows light rays to pass through unhindered for good vision So, it can be transplanted without fear of rejection What is Cornea?

It is an infective or sterile breach in the corneal surface Cause: Injury Infection by microorganisms (eg. Bacteria, fungi, viruses) Exposure to dust and even contact lenses see to be common sources of infection Corneal Ulcers

Early stage of the corneal ulcer can be easily cured by medications But at the severe stage of the corneal ulcer some corneal transplantation surgery need for the patient The treatment is for healing only not for vision improvement After healing the scar of the corneal ulcer it makes white opacity of the cornea Cont…Treatment

So the cornea losses it transparency due the loss of vision PKP – Penetrating Kerato Plasty surgery is done for vision improvement under gradual visual progression
