More than 12 million people in the United States alone have been diagnosed with COPD, and it is estimated that another 12 million are infected but have not been diagnosed. In 2005, an estimated 126, 005 people in the U.S. died from COPD. COPD is the fourth most leading cause of death, following only heart disease, stroke and cancer.
