Ultrasound Examination- Doppler Carotid 1) Demonstrate Appropriate examination technique

Referral Request: 73yr old female for Doppler carotid Ultrasound. 1 week post ? Left facial droop and dizziness. ? Stenosis. No previous history of smoking, non-diabetic, no other risk factors.

Examination Preparation Step 1: Read the referral and understand the clinical information Step 2:Check the computer system for relevant previous imaging Step 3:Set the room up, ensuring the bed and machine are at appropriate height. Have warm gel, towels, or gowns if required. Step 4:Collect patient from the waiting room, check D.O.B. Step 5:Patient lying on the table, explain examination. Step 6:Discuss patient history. Reasons as to why they are having the examination. Check for risk factors for plaque. Eg: History smoking, diabetic, high Bp or cholesterol etc. Step 7: bring patients details up on the machine Step 8: begin examination

Conclusion In order to demonstrate and be competent in performing such examinations, it is always important to understand the reasons as to why we take such representative images. It is also necessary to understand the way in which both b-mode, colour and doppler trace allows you to assess the carotid artery.
