1 Health Agenda Goal 5a Progress toward achieving our goal Facilitated communication with school leadership teams Entered into memorandum of understanding with nursing agencies to provide healthcare to special needs students Expanded community partnerships Department leaders participated in community events to promote and provide opportunities to new nursing graduates

2 Health Agenda Goal 5a Analysis supporting need Department provides healthcare to over 80,000 students; of which 41,000 students have significant health conditions 6,343 students with asthma 1,681 students with allergies 363 students with seizure disorders 133 students with diabetes Department serves a total of 190 schools and programs Nurse to student ratio 1:1,122 in 2010-2011 Projected Nurse to student ratio 1: 1,298 in 2011-2012

3 Challenges Colorado Senate Bill 226 – Allergies and Anaphylaxis Nurses must train all school staff prior to the first day of school Revision of School Budgets Guidelines no longer mandate adhering to nurse to student ratio recommendations Communication Barriers Difficult for nursing leadership to communicate directly with school leadership Educators ineffective at hiring and evaluating health professionals Limited resources related to district wide re-organization Lack of building support for school nurse professional development Health Agenda Goal 5a

4 Looking Forward Promote direct contact between Nursing Services and School Leadership/Administrators School Nurse participation in hiring health support staff Continue immediate postings for School Nurse positions Resolve Human Resources obstacles Funds to advertise in venues that specifically target school nurses rather than educators Build administrative support for staff development specific to School Nursing practice. Nursing Department committed to using HealthTeacher Health Agenda Goal 5a
