Chapter 2: Ecology Section 2.1: Organisms & Their Environment
15
Vocabulary Review Section 2.1 1. Species 2. Ecology 3. Biosphere 4. Abiotic Factor 5. Biotic Factor a. Portion of Earth that supports living things b. Living things c. Organisms that interbreed d. Study of interactions between organisms & environment e. Nonliving things
16
Vocabulary Review Section 2.1 1. Population 2. Community 3. Ecosystem 4. Habitat 5. Niche a. Biological community plus the abiotic factors in their environment b. Place where an organism lives c. Group of the same species that live in the same area d. Role of an organism in its habitat e. All the populations in an area
17
Vocabulary Review Section 2.1 1. Symbiosis 2. Commensa- lism 3. Mutualism 4. Parasitism a. 1 species benefits, 1 harmed b. Both species benefit c. Permanent, close association between 2+ organisms of different species d. 1 species benefits & the other neither harmed nor benefits

19
New Vocabulary Section 2.2 1. Autotroph 2. Heterotroph 3. Decomposer 4. Food chain 5. Trophic level 6. Food web 7. Herbivore 8. Carnivore 9. Omnivore a. Heterotroph that only feeds on plants b. Model shows how energy moves in an ecosystem c. Organisms that make their own food d. Heterotroph - feeds on plants & animals e. Organisms absorb nutrients from dead organisms f. Model shows all the possible feeding relationships at each trophic level g. Heterotroph that only feeds on animals h. Feeding step in the food chain i. Organisms must feed on organisms
20
Food Chain Autotrophs, also known as producers, make up the first level in all food chains which include plants and some aquatic photosynthetic plants. Exs. Grass and Green algae 1 st -order-heterotrophs, also known as primary consumers, make up the second level in a food chain and obtain food from photosynthetic organisms. Ex. Turtle
21
Food Chain 2 nd - order heterotrophs also known as secondary consumers, include some carnivores who feed on 1 st -order heterotrophs. Ex. Owls feed on fishes 3 rd - order heterotrophs also known as tertiary consumers, include carnivores (meat eaters) Ex. Bears
22
Food Chain Decomposers - at every level in food chain, bacteria and fungi break down living matter and help release nutrients
