2 Fossil in the Butte In the southwest corner of Wyoming, there is a flat-topped mountain called Fossil Butte. A fossil of a fish was found near the top of Fossil Butte in a rock formation that is about 50 million years old. Fossils of other kinds of fishes, as well as turtles, have been found at Fossil Butte. The land around Fossil Butte is dry, and the Pacific Ocean is more than 1000 km away. How could fossils of sea- dwelling animals have formed at Fossil Butte?

3 Yum You left out an apple on your table. After 5 days, the apple decays and you notice little worms coming out of the apple. Hmmm… how did the worms get there?

8 Steps of the Scientific Method 1.Observing and stating the problem –You have to notice it before you think about it 2.Form a hypothesis –Take a guess to explain it 3.Test the hypothesis –Create an experiment with controls and variables 4.Record and analyze data 5.Form conclusion –Does you data backup your hypothesis? 6.Replicate the work –Can you do it again and get the same conclusion?

9 OBSERVATIONS: Flies land on meat that is left uncovered. Later, maggots appear on the meat. HYPOTHESIS: Flies produce maggots. PROCEDURE Controlled Variables: jars, type of meat, location, temperature, time Manipulated Variables: gauze covering that keeps flies away from meat Uncovered jarsCovered jars Several days pass Maggots appearNo maggots appear Responding Variable: whether maggots appear CONCLUSION: Maggots form only when flies come in contact with meat.
