FIRST RULE - KEEP IT CURRENT, KEEP IT PROFESSIONAL
3
1. Broken links - avoid “link rot” - broken links turn-off visitors - broken links kill your corporate image - broken links make you look unprofessional - many search engines penalise sites in rankings if they find too many broken links - use Xenu regularly http://www.unisa.edu.au/wag/maintain/broken.asp - eg http://www.unisa.edu.au/arc/research/default.asp (news and events - LH nav) http://www.unisa.edu.au/wag/maintain/broken.asp http://www.unisa.edu.au/arc/research/default.asp

2. Title tags - critical for search engine optimisation (SEO) - no title tags, poor/no search result listings - random search in corporate web > “2 column template” – 166 search results > “fullscreen template” – 108 search results - use keywords in title tags for SEO
5
3. Obsolete sites/pages/content - obsolete sites/pages are still found by search engines - obsolete sites/pages make you look unprofessional - check (especially for pages deep in your site, and unlinked sites) - update - delete - refer to web authoring guide http://www.unisa.edu.au/wag/maintain/delete.asp http://www.unisa.edu.au/wag/maintain/delete.asp

4. Content - no dead people, no stale news - update or archive - keep content fresh eg news updates > search engines will index your site more > keeps visitors coming back > shows your visitors you care - consistency in layout and format - refer Web Style Guide http://www.unisa.edu.au/wag/design/StyleforUniSAweb.doc http://www.unisa.edu.au/wag/design/StyleforUniSAweb.doc
