Martin Luther King Jr. King was a Baptist minister who preached civil disobedience. Civil disobedience is a peaceful refusal to obey laws. Martin Luther told his followers they should always meet hate with love. 1,2

SCLC In 1957 King joined with other church leaders to found the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference). African American churches would play a prominent role in the movement for civil rights. They were places people could gather to show support for one another and hear a common message. 3,4

Sit-ins One of the NON-VIOLENT means of protest supported by Martin Luther King and the SCLC was sit-ins. Sit-ins were a form of protest in which people would sit and refuse to leave. Sit-ins were used in an attempt to desegregate lunch counters throughout the South. 5
