What’s The Matter? Day 1 Investigation Is shaving cream a solid, liquid, or gas?
2
Introduction Although the three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas, not all substances seem to fit perfectly into one of these groups. Today we are going to take a look at shaving cream and see if we can decide whether it should be called a solid, liquid, gas, or something in between.

Let’s Begin 9/11Shaving Matterpg# Question: Is shaving cream a solid, liquid, or a gas? Materials: 1 plate 2-4 pennies Shaving cream Magnifying glass Paper Towels Hypothesis: I believe the shaving cream is a (pick either a solid, liquid, or a gas) because______________. I NOTICE I WONDER

Procedure 1.Squirt some shaving cream onto your plate and observe it. Be sure to write down what you see, what you smell, what it feels like, and what you hear. 2.Examine it with a magnifying lens. 3.Form a hypothesis: Is shaving cream a solid, liquid or gas? 4.Draw what you see in your science journal 5.Try blowing gently on the shaving cream. 6.Try rubbing some between your fingers. 7.Do you still agree with your hypothesis? 8.Record your thoughts……

Let’s finish… Carefully place a penny on top of the shaving cream and observe what happens. Draw your observations and be sure to label your drawings. Now fill in your “I Notice/I Wonder” Chart. Leave the shaving cream overnight and observe again in the morning.

Sum It Up Based upon your investigation today, what do you think shaving cream is? A solid, a liquid, and a gas? What was your Claim? What was your Evidence? What is your Reasoning so far?
