1 Chapter 17 Essential Questions (slides 1-5) What is the US currently like? Who is President during Sp-Am. War? List causes for Sp. Am War? What is Yellow Journalism?

2 What is the U.S currently like?  West is settled  Interested in foreign countries  Industry boomed  Better farming methods.  More products sold.  Businesses looking for new markets.  2 types of people Isolationists: stay out of other countries business. Imperialists: spread US ideas, increase power by controlling other countries. 3 Videos! See Mrs. Aurand’s Wikispace.

3 The Spanish- American War

4 Spanish American War  1898  President – William McKinley  Causes Cuban Revolution Location of Cuba to US Yellow Journalism  Stories in newspapers.  Made up fake stories.  Am. Ppl believed stories, wanted war. sinking of “Maine”

5 Yellow Journalism  U.S. business interests (specifically sugar), saw an opportunity to expand their profits in a U.S.-controlled Cuba  Newspapers owned by the likes of William Randolph Hearst used sensational headlines that exaggerated the truth to convince the U.S. population to go to war  This is called “yellow journalism”

6 Essential Questions (slides 7 – 15) List 2 facts about the Cuban Revolution? What happened to the Battleship Maine? Who did some believe was responsible? How did this push US toward the Spanish American War? When was the Sp. Am war declared?

7 The Cuban Revolution  1898  1 st serious threat to Spanish rule  Cubans placed in concentration camps  Cubans sent info to U.S. about treatment of ppl  US $ and support went to Cuba. Video – See Mrs. Aurand’s wikispace.

8 Battleship Maine  Feb 1898  Maine was in Cuba.  Spain Controlled Cuba, didn’t like US.  Cuba wanted to be free.  We supported Cuba.  Explosion on Maine.  Some thought Spain did it, others an accident.  266 Killed.  Battle Cry – “Remember the Maine…to Hell with Spain!”  US citizens outraged – wanted revenge.

9 The Explosion on the USS Maine  On February 15, 1898, at 9:40 p. m. the Maine sank in Havana Harbor after an explosion, resulting in the deaths of 266 men.  The Spanish attributed the event to an internal explosion; but an American inquiry reported that it was caused by a mine.  Historians now believe it was caused by old gunpowder being stored on the ship

16 Essential Questions (slides 17 – 26)  Who were the rough riders?  Near what countries are Philippines located?  List 1 fact about Manila Bay.  List 1 fact about Santiago.  What colonies did we win from Spain?  What was the treaty made to end the war?  How long did the war last?

19 Philippines  Manila Bay  Spanish navy docked.  May 1898  US navy (Dewey) vs. Spanish navy  US won  In August - US took over Manila Bay

20 Philippines  Santiago  July 1 & 2  Spain = 200,000 soldiers (could only move 13,000)  US = 17,000 soldiers  Spain vs. US = US won.  July 3 rd  Spain navy vs. US navy= US won.

22 Results of Spanish American War  Lasted 4 months - August 1898 to December  Called “splendid little war”  Quickly, easily won.  Treaty of Paris  379 men killed in battle  5,083 died of other ailments.  Yellow fever – mosquitoes  Rotten meat

23 Results of Spanish American War  What should we do with colonies won? Give back to Spain or Free them or Keep, educate them to US way of life.

24 Cuba Forced to let the U.S. lease Guantanamo Bay indefinitely Forced to exist as “protected” but autonomous (self-run) country

25 The Philippines Fought a war with the U.S. to gain independence Over 14 years 1 million Filipino civilians were killed

26 Results of Spanish american War  U.S. gained: Puerto Rico  Still an American possession Guam  Still an American possession Philippines  Gained independence in 1946 Cuba  Gained independence in 1902

27 Essential Questions (slides 28 – 31)  From whom did we buy Alaska? For how much?  Did people think Alaska was worth it? Were they right or wrong? Why?  List 2 reasons why we wanted Hawaii?  Who was President during Panama Canal?  Why did we need the Canal?  List 2 facts about the Canal.  What was the Pan American Union? Who was part of it?  What was the goal of the Pan American Union?

28 Alaska  Sec. of state Seward believed we should expand (manifest destiny)  Wanted to buy Alaska from Russia.  Many didn’t think Alaska was good.  Seward’s Icebox.  Bought for 7.2 million  Rich in gold, oil, forests, fish, coal Video – See Mrs. Aurand’s wikispace.

29 Hawaii  US wanted Hawaii  Bases – Pearl harbor  Missionaries teaching Am life  Sugar/pineapple  1893 US led revolution forced Queen from her throne.  1898 US annex Hawaii  1959 – 50 th State. Video – See Mrs. Aurand’s wikispace

30 Panama Canal  1903  President T. Roosevelt.  “speak softly and carry a big stick”  Wanted quick way from east to west  Offered $ to Columbia to build canal in Panama.  Columbia refused.  Panama won freedom from Columbia.  Panama agreed to US offer.  1907 work began  1914 completed.  Many workers died – diseases. 31 Latin America Relations  Thought US should mind our own business.  1890 North, South, Central Americas formed Pan America Union.  Headquarters – Wash. DC  Goal – to improve relations.

32 Essential Questions (slides 33 -36)  What was the Open Door Policy? Who was it with?  Describe Japan before trading with US before 1854.  Give 1 fact about the US around 1913.  What were Europe Nations during around 1913?  List those countries from above.

33 Far East Relations  China  Worried about people taking them over.  US – “trade with us, we will help protect you.” led to Open door policy 1899 Video – See Mrs. Aurand’s wikispace  Japan isolated itself from world. 1854 US came to Japan to trade. 35 US - 1913  Became a bully - world power.  Led world in business/industry  Major trading power.
