Matter and Temperature
ICP - Ch.10
2
Matter Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space
Movement of particles – collisions – all particles move. Brownian motion
3
Atoms vs. Elements Element – a pure substance, gold for example - Au
Atom – smallest particle of an element that keeps the chemical properties if you split up a gold atom, it is no longer gold.
4
Compound vs. Molecule Compound – substance that has 2 or more elements – a bowl of water for example contains only one type of molecule Molecule – a group of two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds, water - H20 - has 3 atoms
5
Classifying matter Pure substance – cannot be separated into different kinds of matter by physical means Mixture – combination of different elements and/or compounds. Can be separated into different types of matter by physical means – heating, filtering
6
Visual guide
7
Mixtures The compound has properties different from the elements it contains. Each substance is easily separated from the mixture. Homogenous mixture – the same throughout, all samples are the same (sugar dissolved into coffee) Heterogeneous mixture – not the same throughout. (sand and coffee)
8
Summary - Matter
9
Temperature Scales: Conversions: Celsius Fahrenheit Kelvin
Tf = 9/5Tc +32 Fc = 5/9(Tc-32)
