2 What is Social Farming? There is no universally agreed definition of the concept of social farming Social Farming use farming and agriculture as a therapeutic tool to provide health, social or educational care services It is a “new” source of farm income and one of the multiple new functions that agriculture can fulfill in an urbanizing society. Different terms, same meaning: Care farming, Green care, farming for health

5 ENRD Social Farming Thematic Initiative (1) Estonian Rural Network (NRN) activities for Social Farming (SF) are based on European Network for Rural Development (ENRD) thematic working group. During the 4th NRN meeting held in Seville on the 8th of June 2009, the Italian National Rural Network proposed the establishment of a specific thematic activity on Social Farming and invited the other NRNs to express their interest in participating.

7 ENRD Social Farming Thematic Initiative (3) The specific purpose of the social farming thematic initiative is to improve the implementation of RDPs (Rural Development Programs) in support of social farming and to provide inputs to the development of the future programming period at National and EU level.

10 Activities of Estonian Rural Network for Social Farming - STUDY-TRIP (1) 29 November - 2 December 2011 - thematic study-trip about social farming to Italy (near Rome) Organized by Estonian Rural Network in cooperation with Italian Rural Network –Participants: Central Association of Estonian Farmers, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Social Affairs, Estonian, Unemployment Insurance Fund, Estonian Agricultural Registers and Information Board, Estonian Chamber of Disabled People. Visited different social farming organizations: “Agricultural Capodarco” farm, Iacchelli social farm, Garibaldi Institute etc.

12 Activities of Estonian Rural Network for Social Farming - STUDY-TRIP (3) 10-13 April 2012 - thematic study-trip about social farming to South-Finland Organized by Estonian Rural Network in cooperation with Finnish Rural Network and Finnish Green Care –Participants: Central Association of Estonian Farmers, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Social Affairs, Estonian, Unemployment Insurance Fund, Estonian Agricultural Registers and Information Board, Estonian Chamber of Disabled People, farmers. Visited different social farming organizations: Ravuri Farm, Hausjärven Family Home, Ylitalon Alpakat Farm, Pitkäniemen Hospital etc.

14 Activities of Estonian Rural Network for Social Farming - SURVEY December 2011 - Mini-Survey “Social farming in Estonia 2011” Main purpose was to find out the current state, problems and possible solutions of social farming in Estonia Participants: farmers, NGOs, local governments The results showed that people do not know much about social farming and its´ opportunities.

17 Leader and Social Farming Leader programme offers great opportunity to support social farming activities. Because it allows different investments related to disabled people. For example in Estonia Leader programme has supported projects like: –Furnishing working places for disabled people –Bulding parking spaces and pavements for horse therapy centre –Trainings –Bulding entrances for wheelchairs
