OCTOBER 27 TH (A DAY) OCTOBER 28 TH (B DAY) Science Class
2
Warm Up – Answer in your notebook (both questions) 1. Not everyone can make the bell ring at the top? Why? 2. How can we change the amount of energy we exert (use)?
3
Warm Up 1. Some people are stronger; they can exert enough energy on the base to ring the bell at the top 2. Yes, we can change how hard we swing the rubber mallet. We can exert different amounts of energy
4
Renewable Energy Brochure…. Take out your Renewable Energy Brochure now…… Please make sure your name is on your brochure… Pass them in / over using our procedure now… This is your last grade for Quarter 1!!!!!
5
Interactive notebook Find the next blank page in your notebook Label it: Energy 6.P.3: Learning Set 2.1 Add this to your table of contents
6
Energy Textbook Turn to page EN 42 We will read the section together Our objective today…. Explore factors that determine how much energy an object has Complete a lab investigation and a vocabulary activity
7
Today’s Agenda…. You will receive a handout titled ENERGY OBSERVATIONS
8
Today’s Handout…. There are 2 sides…. Complete side 1 first (vocabulary) Use page EN 44 in your textbook to define the following vocabulary words…. Potential Energy Elastic Potential Energy Gravitational Potential Energy 8 minutes
9
Today’s Handout…. Next we will begin side 2 of your handout (lab) You will work in small groups today Each group will receive 4 toys to investigate These toys must last both days, for all blocks (PLEASES DO NOT BREAK THESE TOYS) We will review the handout now Items #5 and #6 will be demonstrations…
10
Today’s Lab…Handout Objects include: Station 1: Windup toy- chattering teeth Station 2: Bouncy ball Station 3: Spring toy Station 4: Push down toy Station 5: Newton’s cradle (demo only) Station 6: Wind chimes (demo only)
11
Today’s Lab…Each column in detail Object column (this is filled out for you) Observation of how the object works (you will complete this column on your own) Indicator (what do you see, smell, touch, taste, or hear that indicates what the object does) What are the different types of energy the toy uses or what kinds of energy transformations does the toy indicate
12
Investigation of 4 toys You will have 20 minutes to investigate the 4 toys given to you today and complete your handout After 20 minutes when the timer goes off, we will check our understanding of the 4 toys Next we will complete the 2 demonstrations as a whole group
13
Today’s Lab….Demonstrations What is Newton’s Cradle? Raise your hand if you know how this works? What type of energy does a Newton’s Cradle use? What is the energy transformation?
14
Video explaining Newton’s Cradle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0HZ9N9yvcU
15
Todays’ Lab…Demonstration Wind chimes Raise your hand if you know how this works? What type of energy does a wind chime use? What is the energy transformation?
16
World’s Largest Wind Chime http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HdBEPGwxco
17
Do we understand….. Summary of what we did in our lab today… Turn to page EN 43 in your textbook We will be reading the section in yellow together now
18
Let’s check our understanding… You will answer questions 1 & 2 in your interactive notebook on PAGE EN 44 - Reflect Copy the question and answer in complete sentences
19
Draw this table in your notebook Question 1 1. Describe the energy that was transformed to make each toy move. ObjectEnergy (type (s) transformed)
20
Draw this table in your notebook Question 2 2. What did you do to control each type of energy you observed? ObjectHow did you control it?
21
