Long boats Viking longboats were made out of oak wood, because it was the strongest wood they had. Longboats had 20-60 oars. If it was a good day they would go to land and make camp, but if it was a bad day and the tide was against them they had to put the sails horizontal and eat dried fish. The sinister wooden figurehead was carved on the bow to instil fear on the recipients of their raids.

How to build a Viking house The first job is to build a hut. Some men cut Down trees, shape the timbers and make the building’s framework. Next you dig up sods of Turf to cover the roof and walls. These walls are about one metre thick and will keep every one warm in the winter.

Clever Vikings The Vikings were famous for sailing huge distances from their home in Scandinavia between AD 800 and 1066 to raid and plunder, but they also traded with people from other countries. The name ‘Viking means ‘a pirate raid’ in the Old Norse language.

Viking War The Vikings usually only had one battle a life time, some Vikings did not have a battle at all. One type of battle was called a wall of shields. They all looked at the opposite side and picked one warrior and charge all together.
